Unfurl new thinking

Goals and getting unstuck

There’s a lot of talk about the ‘new term feeling’ when we ‘set goals and get to work’ (as well as buy new stationary and shoes).

But what if you are not quite feeling it?

Feeling stuck?

If you are thinking ‘I don’t even know what my goal is’, that is ok too! Stay with the feeling. It’s a signal that something important needs your attention.

Try these questions to get curious:

  • What does “stuck” feel like in your body?
  • What meaning are you giving to feeling “stuck”?
  • If you woke up tomorrow “unstuck”, how would you know?

Feeling fuzzy?

You might have a general sense of what you’d like, but it feels a bit out of focus.

Try these questions to sharpen focus:

  • What would be different if you woke up tomorrow having achieved your goal?
  • What exactly?
  • To make that reality, what do you need to say ‘yes’ to? And ‘no’ to?
  • What do you need from yourself? And others?
  • What might get in the way?

Feeling like you are getting in your own way?

Sometimes we know what we want, but that doesn’t make it any easier to make it happen. It’s frustrating!

Try these questions to get underneath what’s going happening on the surface:

  • What am I doing (or not doing) that is getting in my way?
  • What assumptions am I making?
  • What do I gain from maintaining things as they are?
  • What feels uncomfortable when I imagine my goal?
